ARRL DX SSB 97
JH7AFR
(op 7J7ABV/K9QQ)

The station is located about 30km south of Hachinoe, and 55km south of my home in Misawa. You can't really tell from this map, but the station is less than 5km from the Pacific Ocean--a clear
shot to the west coast of the U.S.

This is a view of the JH7AFR QTH from the entrance to the property.  Everything sits on about 2 acres of what probably use to be pasture or farm land. Although I didnt' climb them, I'm sure you can sea the Pacific ocean from the top of the two towers on the left. The far right tower holds a 6 element 15 mtr monobander at about 70 feet. The center tower holds the 20 mtr monobander.  The far left tower holds the 40 and 80 meter monobanders.
It's hard to see, but my host was at the top of the 100 foot, 20mtr tower fixing the rotator.  All the tower and antennas are Japanese made.  The tower is similar to Rohn 45G.

This is the big tower, about 130 feet tall.  The top antenna is a shortened 3 element yagi for 40 meters.  The bottom yagi is a shortened 2 element for 80 meters. Both antennas worked great into the states. Only thing I noticed was that the F/B on 80 is probably low. The Russian CW stations were really loud during the late hours of our evening stateside openning.
This is my host, talking with one of his friends on 40mtrs. I was in the backgound eating some lunch and waiting for the early West coast openning.

Me, towards the end of the first night's 40/80 mtr openning. My host always took care to help me wind down at the end of the night. Notice the clear, amber liquid to the right of the keyboard. That's real beer, none of that Wisconsin stuff.
(l to r) Tadao (JH7DNO), me, Tatsuo (JH7AFR).  Tadao is probably the most active single-op contester in JA7. He lives within about 10km of JH7AFR, rock-throwing distance from the Pacific Ocean. JH7AFR has a few certificates from the ARRL DX contests, but spends most of his time DXing.
